Ingredients
Scale
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
- 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for greasing
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh Italian herbs (such as oregano, basil, rosemary)
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center.
- Pour the yeast mixture and olive oil into the well. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough. Gently knead in Parmesan cheese and chopped herbs.
- Shape dough into a round loaf or place in a greased loaf pan.
- Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Brush the top of the loaf with melted butter. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese and garlic powder.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Let cool slightly before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For a pull-apart bread, shape the dough into rolls and arrange them in a greased baking pan before the second rise.
- Feel free to add other cheeses like provolone or cheddar.
- Fresh herbs will provide a more vibrant flavor.
